Abatis

 

An abatis, also spelled abattis, is an obstacle of felled trees with branches pointing outwards used as a military defence strategy.  They were used to keep the approaching enemy under fire for as long as possible and were most effective against cavalry.

  1. P.S. Should you ever require people to build an abatis you might be better off just asking them to build a barricade - it could save a lot of explaining in the circumstances...
