Eschew

  
To eschew means to shun; avoid; stay away from deliberately; stay clear of; to avoid habitually especially on moral or practical ground.

It is generally pronounced e-shu.

  1. Back in the 1960s I read a plaque in my doctor's office, it read, "eschew obfuscation."

    He explained that the plaque reminded him to speak plainly to his patients. I liked that.
