"That's a great deal to make one word mean," Alice said in a thoughtful tone. "When I make a word do a lot of work like that," said Humpty Dumpty, "I always pay it extra."

Smirkle

Tracy in New York finished one of her postings with a * smirkle * the other day.

That was a word I didn’t recognise. I love words I don’t recognise. I looked it up and whilst it is not to be found in the conventional dictionaries there were three choices in alternative dictionaries –

To smirkle – meaning to steal or pilfer;
A smirkle - the stiff, painful smile worn by the loser of a contest while congratulating the winner;
A smirkle - A facial expression that is halfway between a smile and a smirk.

Ignoring the first meaning I think the other two are wonderfully appropriate meanings for the word.

  1. That picture is so apropos! I think "smirkle" just might be my favorite new word. :)

    P.S.) My word verification for this comment is "ickoamys." You don't know how much I wish this was an actual word...

  2. hahaha - I love it!

    Smirkle...cute and a perfect picture to portray this definition. When I saw it on my updates, it instantly made me smile :o).

    Now...I thought "whilst" was GB's favorite word of choice...

    And...I read your interview. Thought I'd mention my love for strawberries and chocolate too...oooohh-melted chocolate. Lucien and I just enjoyed a snack of melted white chocolate with strawberries today...before our afternoon bus run. Yummy stuff!
