Lonelyhearts
columns were at one time personal advice columns in newspapers, supposedly written by a particular
‘Agony Aunt’.
The
name derived from ‘Miss Lonelyhearts’, the title of a Nathaniel West novel
of 1933 about a man who writes just such a column. In more recent times
the term lonelyhearts column tends to be used for listings of men and women seeking companionship
or partners.
