Philologer

Philology is described as meaning literary study or classical scholarship; the study of disciplines relevant to literature or to language as used in literature.  But according to Dr Johnson’s Dictionary a philologer was ‘one whose chief study is language; a grammarian; a critick’.  The word is no longer in use.
